Alloys crystallized from an amorphous precursor have a nanometre-scale microstructure consisting mainly of the magnetically soft phase bcc-Fe and the hard phase Nd2Fe14B, and exhibit a high remanence in excess of 1.0 T. Addition of Al reduces the mean grain sizes of bcc-Fe and Nd2Fe14B. Also, Al enters and leads to lattice distortion of the Nd2Fe14B magnetic phase. Enhanced remanence resulting from exchange coupling, is shown to be due to ultra fine grain size. The microstructure of the two-phase alloy is investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
