由于市场份额萎缩,日本先锋、日立、东芝、富士通、板硝子和中国台湾台塑光电、中华映管、达人科技等知名厂商纷纷宣布退出PDP产业,而中国大陆对PDP项目的投资却不断加大,继南京华显高科和四川虹欧等离子平板显示器项目开工之后,2009年7月安徽鑫昊等离子项目在安徽合肥启动,致使全球PDP制造基地和技术中心逐渐向中国大陆转移,但PDP在未来的平板显示市场竞争中能否占有一席之地、形成一支独秀的局面,备受关注.PDP主要是利用稀有气体电离放出波长为100~200nm真空紫外光用以激发三基色荧光粉进而实现彩色显示,目前存在的主要问题是发光效率低、亮度低以及作为超大屏幕显示器(例如103英寸(261.62cm))能耗高.PDP的发光效率不仅与气体放电方式和驱动电路有关,而且与荧光材料的发光效率直接相关.以红色真空紫外荧光材料为例,系统总结了近年来在PDP新型荧光材料和真空紫外激发发光机理方面取得的进展,并对未来PDP的研发提出了前瞻性建议.
