A novel method is developed to synthesize WC 'TiC-Co nanocomposite powders. Conventionally, WC-TiC-Co mixture powders are fabricated by producing WC TiC solid solution powder first and then mixing with pure cobalt powder by ball milling. In the present method, WC-TiC-Co nanocomposite powders are synthesized simultaneously at 1300 degreesC 3 h by carbothermic reduction of complex oxide powder, which is made initially from salt solution containing tungsten, titanium and cobalt elements by spray drying. SEM and XRD are used to characterize the morphology and the structure of as-produced powder. It is shown that the average particle size of WC-TiC-Co powders is 300 nm and the grain size of the WC phase is 60 nm in the end product. The forming mechanism is discussed. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd.
