By using the Cr3+ and Fe3+ ions as probes, from the hydrostatic pressure and uniaxial stress dependences of EPR spectra for these paramagnetic ions in a crystal of AlCl3.6H2O, the local compressibilities of the (Al.6H2O)3+ group have been determined from crystal-field theory. The results are different from those of the host crystal and the reasonableness of these results is discussed. It appears that the paramagnetic ions, whose EPR spectra are very sensitive to the variation of the immediate environment, can be used, to a certain degree, as a probe to determine the local compressibility for some groups containing these impurity ions.
