A new serious of iron-based superconductor SmFe_(1-x)Ir_xAsO has been obtained by 5d transition metal Ir partially replacing Fe in SmFeAsO. The superconductivity emerges at 8 K with the Ir doping level x = 0. 05. The superconducting transition shifts to higher temperatures with increasing Ir content, reaching a maximum value of 17. 3 K at x= 0. 15. X-ray Diffraction, SEM and EDX measurement were performed. The XRD patterns of all samples can be well indexed based on the tetragonal ZrCuSiAs-type structure, plate-like grains which present to be common features of layered compounds are observed in the SEM image. The increases of the lattice constant a and decreases of c together with the clear appearance of Ir in the EDX results indicate that iridium has been successfully substituted into the SmFeAsO compounds, forming a new serious of iron-based superconductors.
