Preparation of exfoliated graphite loaded with photoactive anatase-type TiO2 powders was successfully carried out by heating a mixture of graphite flakes and titanium isopropoxide. Fine TiO2 particles with a spherical morphology were preferentially located at the edges of graphite layers. Exfoliated graphite loaded with photoactive anatase powders showed the ability to adsorb and decompose heavy oil. Under UV irradiation, heavy oil sorbed into exfoliated graphite loaded TiO2 could be decomposed at a much faster rate than the case when TiO2 particles with the anatase structure were mixed with heavy oil.
