The characteristics of the formation and spreading process of micro-droplets was investigated in detail based on the potential distribution of micro-droplets and thin electrolyte layer on metal surface in a humidity-controlled chamber by scanning Kelvin probe and stereoscopic microscope. The results proved that micro-droplets could intensify the wetting ability of a metal surface and promote formation and spreading of thin electrolyte layer on the metal surface. Meanwhile, micro-droplets could accelerate the formation and expansion of localized thin electrolyte layers on various locations, and further promote them merging together to form continuous thin film. The formation of continuous thin electrolyte layer on metal surface means that atmospheric corrosion steps into the rapid development stage.
