Scientific Quality Department, Central Iron and Steel Research Institute, Beijing 100081, China)To explore the fatigue properties of heavy-duty gear steel with different case depth, fatigue properties of heavy-duty gear steel 18Cr2Ni2MoVNb were investigated by means of rotating bending fatigue tests without carburization and after carburization. Results show that carburization can evidently increase the fatigue properties due to the extremely high hardness of carburized case. With increase of carburization time, the carburized depth increases, but the fatigue properties first increase and then decrease and the fatigue limit peaks at a case depth of 1mm. It is due to the contradictory effects of case depth and the increased retained austenite fraction, which may counteract the improvement of fatigue properties by the increase of case depth.
