One-dimensional nanostructures of ternary oxide spinel, Zn2SnO4 have been prepared for the first time on a large scale via a reaction between element Sn, ZnS and Fe(NO)(3) at 1350 degrees C in a high-temperature tube furnace. Scanning and transmission electron microscopic observations have confirmed that the as-synthesized products consist of belt-like and cone-like single crystals. The dimensions of each nanobelt range from several hundred micrometers long, 100-500 nm wide, and several tens of nanometers thick. Formation mechanisms of these 1D nanostructures have been proposed.
