The deformation and fracture behaviour of nickel-base superalloy GH698 with different grain size have been studied at 700℃ under fatigue-creep interaction conditions. Compared with coarse-grained specimens, the grain refining process shows obvious effect on the mechanical behaviour of the alloy, i. e. in F and C zones, the fraction of pure fatigue and creep fracture on fracture surfaces is greatly reduced, which decreases and increases the fracture life in zones F and C respectively, in FC and C zones, creep deformation is greatly restrained by the alternating stress component, which increases the fracture life remarkably. It is also proved that in spite of the difference in microstru- tures such as grain size, for a constant tem- perature, a unique life equation t_r=A~n can be used to predict rupture life within the stress region controlled by the same fracture mode.

The smelting of titaniferous magnetite in blast fuynace in China is unique in the nature of problems and their solutions. Fundamentals of this successful technology will be discussed. Topics to be covered are: (1) the characteristics of high content TiO_2 in blast furnace slag; (2) influence of various factors on Ti transfer process; (3) raising oxygen potential for adequate fluidity of the slag with TiO_2 in the range of 25-30 wt-% and stability of TiC and TiN in slag.

Introducing N_2 during sputtering and pre-oxidation of substrate were investigated to improve the adhesion of sputtered TiC coating to steel substrate. The results show that yeactive gas N_2 increases the adhesion of TiC coating to steel because of a graded interface existing between coating and substrate. The interaction of discharge plasma with the surface of substrate was discussed. Pre-oxidation of substrate is effective for improving the adhesion due to the fomation of FeTi0_3 which appeared as an inteylayer between coating and pre-oxidized substrate.

The crack initiation behaviour under cyclic compression foy the notched specimen was investigated. It has been found that the cycles for crack initiation increase with the increase of compressive mean stress, and the decrease of stress amplitude. The stress amplitude plays a more important role than the mean stress does. Photoelastic coating and finite element methods were employed to measure and calculate the stress field in the notched part. The resul ts show that the crack initiation under compression is attributed to the tensile stress which may exist during unloadtng. If the true stress state in the notch is compressive, no crack initiates.

Rolling Contact Fatigue(RCF) is a cumulative damage phenomenon when metals are subjected to repeated contact stresses. The fomation of pitting on the contact surface is the result of the rolling contact fatigue. The morphologies of rolling contact fatigue fracture of the har- dened steels (86CrHoV7, 42CrMo) show that strong resemblance in fractuye mechanisms exists between rolling contact fatigue and uni-axial fatigue. Since fatigue striations are hardly observed in hardened steels under uni-axial fatigue, it is interesting to note that the state of stress in rolling contact fatigue is more favor- able to ductile fractures than in uni-axial fatigue.
