PHASE DIAGRAM OF Nd-Fe-B TERNARY SYSTEM——I.Isothermal Section at Room Temperature

The microstructures of both as-cast and homogenized Nd-Fe-B ternary alloys have been studied. The stable phase regions existing in Nd-Fe-B ternary system at room temperature have been established by the microzone composition analysis and the phase identification. Based on the obtained results, an isothermal section of Nd-Fe-B ternary system at room temperature was drawn.

According to the experimental data of phase transition taken from DTA, metallography, SEM and microzone composition, two vertical sections of the ternary phase diagram (B=5.88 at.-%, Nd≤45.41 at.-% andNd_2Fe_(14)BNd_(1.1)Fe_4B_4 , B≤44.56 at.-%) have been drawn in detail. It is verified that the crystallization of both Nd_2Fe_(14)B and Nd_(1.1)Fe_4B_4 phase, during cooling from melt, would take peritectic reaction instead of solid-liquid congruent precipita- tion.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH TEMPERATURE STRUCTURAL MATERIALS FOR AERO-ENGINE APPLICATIONS

The status of research, development of superalloys and materials processing & fabrication technologies for aero-engine applications in China Aviation Industry, with an emphasis on recent achievements at BIAM including directionally solidified and single crystal superalloys for blade and vane applications, wrought superalloys for aero-engine disks and rings, and powder metallurgy (PM) superalloys for high performance disk applications were described. It was also reviewed the development of new class of high temperature structural materials, such as structural intermetallics, and advanced material processing technologies including rapid solidification, spray forming and so on. The trends of research and development of the above mentioned superalloys and processing technologies are outlined. Cast, wrought and PM superalloys are the workhorse materials for the hot section of current aero-engines. New high temperature materials and advanced processing technologies have been and will be the subject of study. It is speculated that high performance, high purity and low cost superalloys and technologies will play key roles in aero-engines.

The current research and development of magnesium alloys is summarized. Several aspects of magnesium alloys are described: cast Mg alloy, wrought Mg alloy, and novel processing. The subjects are discussed individually and recommendations for further study are listed in the final section.

Research and development of carbon materials for electrochemical capacitors - II - The carbon electrode

The state-of-the-art research and development of various carbons for possible application as the electrode material in electrochemical capacitors (ECs) are summarized. The main factors affecting the properties of ECs are carefully reviewed, from the material characteristics such as specific surface area, pore size distribution and pore volume, surface functional groups and graphitic orientation of the carbon materials, to the electrode characteristics and electrochemical aspects such as electrode preparation process, electrode density and thickness, electrode conductivity and pseudo-capacitance, etc. In particular, an overview is given of the most recent progress in electrochemical capacitors using carbon nanotubes as the electrode material and the prospect of their use in this application is highlighted.

Key R&D activities for development of new types of wrought magnesium alloys in China

Transactions of Nonferrous Metals Society of China

Many researchers in China are actively engaged in the development of new types of wrought magnesium alloys with low cost or with high-performances and novel plastic processing technologies. The research activities are funded primarily through four government-supported programs: the Key Technologies R&D Program of China, the National Basic Research Program of China, the National High-tech R&D Program of China, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The key R&D activities for the development of new wrought magnesium alloys in China are reviewed, and typical properties of some new alloys are summarized. More attentions are paid to high-strength wrought magnesium alloys and high-plasticity wrought magnesium alloys. Some novel plastic processing technologies, emerging in recent years, which aim to control deformation texture and to improve plasticity and formability especially at room temperature, are also introduced.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF NEW SUPERALLOY REMELTING PROCES

Shanghai No.5 Steel Co., Ltd. has recently introduced a set of 5-ton protective atmosphere electroslag remelting furnace and a set of lO-ton helium-cooling vacuum arc remelting furnace,both of them are the first one of its kind in China. With these equipment, remelting processes about alloy GH4169, GH2132 and GH738 were researched, the process of producing alloy GH4169 by VIM+ VAR + ESR triplex-process was developed, and their effects were discussed.

Research and development of carbon materials for electrochemical capacitors I. Electrochemical capacitors

Electrochemical capacitors (ECs) store energy in eletric double-layers formed along the interface of electrode material and electrolyte, this produces an extremely large capacitance compared with the traditional capacitors. The fundamental principles of electrochemical capacitors are briefly introduced, and the key materials used like electrode materials, electrolytes, separator and current collector materials are summarized. Electrochemical capacitors with pseudocapacitance, such as metal oxides, polymers and hybrid capacitors, are also discussed. The characteristics, possible application fields, the development state, the future R&D prospects for electrochemical capacitors are highlighted.

DEVELOPMENT OF NEW THERMO-MECHANICAL SIMULATOR

A new multifunction thermo-mechanical simulator was successfully developed. The accuracy of measurement and control is very high through all digital control. More than twenty tests may be fulled including tension, compression, torsion, combination large deformation that meets the study of supersteel, etc. Its performance is introduced in the paper, such as designed ideas, machine structure, man-machine interface, con- trol system, etc.
