Recent Developments in the Continuous Processing of Steels

This paper reviews recent developments in the contin- uous processing of steels in Japan.The following items are discussed:continuous casting-direct rolling(CC-DR) process of hot-rolled strip:thermomechanical control process(TMCP)of heavy plates:in—line heat treating pro- cess of rails:direct lead patenting(DLP)process of wire rods;and fully integrated processing line(FIPL)of cold-rolled strip.

Practice for Extending Blast Furnace Campaign Life at Wuhan Iron and Steel Corporation

One of the problems encountered in 60′s to 80′s of 20th century in China′s steel industry was short life of blast furnace shaft as well as the excessive erosion of blast furnace hearth. A series of research work was carried out in order to extend blast furnace campaign life. The concept of research and development was integrated in the construction of BF (blast furnace) No5 at WISCO (Wuhan Iron and Steel Corporation), and in October, 1991, the BF No5 was blown in. The blast furnace has worked smoothly for more than 15 years without any medium repair even guniting. It is expected that the campaign life of BF No5 would be longer than 16 years with a production over 11 000 t per unit inner volume (m3). A new blast furnace with an inner volume of 3 400 m3 is under construction, and is designed with a campaign life of 20 years without any medium repair. The campaign life of blast furnaces in China has been extended in recent years.

Treatment of Reused Comprehensive Wastewater in Iron and Steel Industry With Electrosorption Technology

Electrosorption technology was used to treat the reused comprehensive wastewater from iron and steel industry. A problem of relatively high conductivity of wastewater which greatly affects the reuse was examined, and industrial test was conducted for the reused water advanced deionization and purification in a comprehensive wastewater treatment plant of WISCO [Wuhan Iron and Steel (Group) Corporation]. The results of the onsite industrial test showed a satisfactory treatment performance for the reused water even at a flow rate of 1000 L/h in a standard 500 L/h unit. The average conductivity decreased by about 70%, from 580-780 μS/cm to 100-350 μS/cm. The average removal efficiency of Cl- and Ca2+ was about 75% and 68%, respectively, and CODCr of the treated water was also reduced in some degree while the pH value was almost unchanged. The energy consumption was as low as 06 kWh/t, which was remarkably superior to the conventional technologies. Therefore, it is entirely feasible that the novel electrosorption technology can be used in enhanced desalination and purification treatment of reused comprehensive wastewater in iron and steel industry.

The Behavior of Rare Earths in Steel

This review paper outlines recent progress in the application of rare earth metals (RE) in steel to improve the mechanical properties of steel. It includes: the physical chemistry of RE in steel; comparison of the application of RE and Ca in steel; the ways of adding RE into steel and nozzle blockage; the solid solubi- lity limit of RE in Fe and the amount of RE soluble in steel; the segregation of RE on grain boundaries of steel and its reaction with other elements; the effect of RE on the structure and mechanical properties of steels; the reaction of RE with H in steel.

Output Model of Steel Plant

Based on the requirement of compactivity, continuity, and high efficiency, and taking full advantage of cushion capability of flexible parts such as external refining in new generation steel plant, an output model of steel plant was established in terms of matching between BOF and caster. Using this model, the BOF nominal capacity is selected, the caster output and equipment amount are computed, and then the steel plant output is computed.

THE STEEL INDUSTRY IN ARAB COUNTRIES

A brief introduction to Arab countries, in respect of their locations, populations, areas and mineral resources, was given. The development of steel industry in Am6 countries in last two decades was staled as a whole. And the steel industries in Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arch Emirates (UAE), Morocco, Libya, Joanal, Tunisia, Syria, Iraq, Algeria and Bahrain were analyzed separately. Some development problems faced by Arab steel industry, such as steel market, natural resources, manpower and finance, were pointed out.

Phosphorus Removal Using Steel Slag

Steel slag is a byproduct produced in large amounts in the steel-making process. It is an important resource that can be effectively utilized. An experiment was described in which steel slag was tested as an adsorbent for the removal of phosphorus from waste water. Phosphorus removal depended on the amount of steel slag added, the pH value, the contact time, and the initial concentration. Under laboratory conditions when the added slag was 7.5g/L, the contact time 2h, and the pH value was equivalent to 6.5, over 99% of the phosphorus was removed; the experimental data on steel slag adsorption of phosphorus in the water fitted the Freundlich isotherm model. Steel slag was found to be very effective in adsorbing phosphorus.
