Photocatalytic Property of TiO2 Films Deposited by Pulsed DC Magnetron Sputtering

TiO2 thin films were prepared by DC magnetron sputtering with the oxygen flow rate higher than the threshold. The film deposited for 5 h was of anatase phase with a preferred orientation along the <220> direction, but the films deposited for 2 and 3 h were amorphous. The transmittance and photocatalytic activity of the TiO2 films increased constantly with increasing film thickness. When the annealing temperature was lower than 700℃, only anatase grew in the TiO2 film. TiO2 phase changed from anatase to rutile when the annealing temperature was above 800℃. The photocatalytic activity decreased with increasing annealing temperature.

Oxidation and Hot Corrosion Behavior of a Composite Coating System

The oxidation and hot corrosion behavior of Co-Ni-Cr-Al-Ta-Y coating produced by magnetron sputtering with and without enamel coating has been investigated in air at 900ºC and in molten 75 wt pct NaCl+25 wt pct Na2SO4 at 850ºC. The results show that the enamel coating possesses good hot corrosion resistance in the molten salts, in comparison with the sputtered Co-Ni-Cr-Al-Ta-Y coating. In the hot corrosion test, breakaway corrosion did not occur on the samples with enamel coating and the composition of enamel coating did not significantly change either. The oxidation resistance of the sputtered coating, which offers good adhesion, can be improved by the enamel coating.

The protective properties of high-temperature oxide film in 3.5% NaCl solution

The electrochemical behaviors of high temperature oxide film formed on the sputtered microcrystalline coating of M38 alloy (mc-M38) were investigated by potentiodynamic and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques in 3.5% NaCl solution. Mott-Schottky analysis was used to study the semi-conductive properties of the surface oxide. The results of the capacitance measurements showed that the oxide films on both the coating and the cast alloy were p-type semiconducting characteristics. Both the carrier density (Na) and the flat band potential (Efb) were obviously frequency-dependent, and the optimal frequency range was from 1000 to 1500 Hz. The oxidized coating exhibited higher protectivity than the oxidized cast alloy due to the lower carrier density compared with that of the oxidized cast alloy. The EIS data of the long-term immersing tests suggested that the oxide film served as an inner-barrier layer against chloride ions. The penetration of the aggressive ions into the surface oxide resulted in the decreased polarization resistance as a function of the immersion time.

Protective Effect of the Sputtered TiAlCrAg Coating on the High-Temperature Oxidation and Hot Corrosion Resistance of Ti-Al-Nb Alloy

The effect of a sputtered Ti-48Al-8Cr-2Ag (at. pct) coating on the oxidation resistance of the cast Ti-46.5Al-5Nb (at. pct) alloy was investigated in air at 1000~1100℃. Hot corrosion in molten 75 wt pct Na¬2SO¬4+25 wt pct K¬2SO¬4 was investigated at 900℃. The scale on the cast TiAlNb tends to spall in air, while the scale on coating is very adherent. The sputtered Ti-48Al-8Cr-2Ag coating remarkably improved high temperature oxidation resistance of the cast Ti-46.5Al-5Nb alloy because of the formation of an adherent Al¬2O¬3 scale. Due to the inward diffusion of Cr, Kirkendall voids were found at the coating/substrate interface. TiAlCrAg coating provided excellent hot corrosion resistance for TiAlNb alloy in molten 75 wt pct Na¬2SO¬4+25 wt pct K¬2SO¬4 at 900℃ due to the formation of a continuous Al¬2O¬3 scale.

Preparation and Corrosion Resistance of Magnesium Coatings by Magnetron Sputtering Deposition

Magnesium coatings were fabricated on stainless steel substrates (1Cr11Ni2W2MoV) by a plane magnetron sputtering technique. The argon pressure and the substrate condition (including temperature and the substrate was rotated or fixed) were varied in order to evaluate the influence of the parameters on the crystal orientation and morphology of the coating. The corrosion behavior of the coatings in 1 wt pct NaCl solution was studied by electrochemical methods. The results showed that all coatings exhibited preferred orientation (002) as the argon pressure increased from 0.2 to 0.4 Pa. The morphologies of the coatings varied with the argon pressure and with whether the substrate was rotated or fixed. The open circuit potential of the coatings was more positive than that of cast AZ91D magnesium alloy. However, the immersion test in 1 wt pct NaCl solution showed that the corrosion rates of the coatings were higher than that of cast AZ91D magnesium alloy.
